Mafia district council has 34 primary schools,32 are government schools, 2 schools are privately owned by religions.The current enrollment of pupils grade I-VII for the year 2016/2017 is 9146 among them 4451 are boys,4695 are girls.The district has a total number of 352 teachers, apart from 377 required.The teachers ratio is 1:26 compared to the national ratio of 1:40.

3. School Enrollment
Enrollment and access to primary education is one of the key priorities in the district. Registration of children into pre-primary and primary education is highly recommended to all parents and community at large, for the year 2016 in government schools enrollment for pre-primary is 948(459 boys and 489 girls) out of 1033 (485 boys and 548 girls),equal to 95%.In primary education the enrollment is 2195 (1094 boys and 1101 girls), equal to 163%.
4. SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE
The district has an acute shortage of school infrastructure .There are 215 permanent classrooms out of 355 required ,teachers houses 110 out of 395 required ,and pit latrines are 304 out of 411.
5. SCHOOL DESKS
There is no shortage of school desks in the district, the required desks for the ratio of 1:2 is 4573,the district have 5320 desks with 747 extra. However, school head teachers have been urged to use these desks for pre-primary pupils.
6. PERFORMANCE
The rate of performance to pupils is encouraging compared to past years, the results for standard vii in 2015 was 54.5% while in 2014 was 52%.
